Vitamin D and your health
Brought to you by Tina Hausner – PharmD
- Vitamin D is essential for bone health and to prevent fractures and osteoporosis
- Vitamin D is found in fatty fish, beef liver, egg yolks, and some cheeses, among other sources
- It is also synthesized by your body when exposed to the UV rays in sunlight
- Many adults are deficient in vitamin D and deficiency has been linked to hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes, immune function, and cancer
- Some people, including older adults, pregnant women, and children, will benefit from supplementation
- For most adults 600-800IU (15-20mcg) per day is the correct amount of supplementation
- For more information or to decide if a supplement is right for you, talk with your physician or pharmacist
